I am in the planning stages of migrating the local Monroe County
Democratic Party over to Linux and OpenOffice.
Fileserver - The idea right now is use Fedora for our main fileserver
(but I'm not picky -- openSuse is swell too). I would like to get
something like Alfresco (http://www.alfresco.com/) running for
centralized document management purposes. We have long have a
problem managing files.
Workstations - The user population is not always computer literate,
so it needs to be pretty easy. I am looking at Ubuntu for 6-8
workstations in the Headquarters. Open Office will go on each
machine, as will Firefox and maybe a few other apps. A lot of our
operations (volunteer management, walk/mailing list creation, etc)
will be web-based this coming election cycle.
I'm writing to ask two things... 1) whether anyone has any thoughts
about this plan, and 2) whether anyone would be interested in helping
out. I will probably be working on this throughout next weekend.
Even if you don't care about politics you could help get yet another
organization off of the M$ crack. We are a completely volunteer
organization of course and appreciate all of the help we can get.
Thoughts?
