[BLUG] Linux desktop distribution for speed?

Mind you now, I'm not advocating this approach, but when I started  
using Gentoo, it was on a 266MHz laptop.  It was pretty painful until  
I learned how to use distcc to get other machines on the network to  
help compile things.  I used fluxbox for my wm
